Brenda Garratt-Glassman

Brenda Garratt-Glassman was the first Black female dancer to graduate from the Royal Ballet School. She became a soloist with Dance Theatre of Harlem (1973–1977) and performed on Broadway, in films including The Wiz starring Michael Jackson and Diana Ross, and as a featured
dancer in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. In the UK, she was principal dancer in the R.S.C production of Kiss Me Kate, and in the show Mutiny on the Bounty in the West End.

 

Other performance credits include Channel 4’s Streets Ahead, Tangos and Rags, and for children’s TV on the Sunday show “Umbrella”. Brenda’s teaching career includes leading the Joyce Butler School of Dance, serving as Principal teacher for the Royal Ballet’s Chance to Dance programme, and delivering masterclasses, summer intensives, and adjudication for leading institutions including the Royal Ballet School, Cecchetti Society, and I.S.T.D.
 

Currently, Brenda is a Senior Assessor for Trinity College London for Dance, Drama and Musical Theatre, an Assessor for The Council for Dance, Drama and Musical Theatre (CDMT), and the external examiner for Arts Ed School on their BA Musical Theatre programme. She also sits on the board for AED and continues to teach and examine widely.
